Infinity Vision Sounds Revolutionary… But Let’s Be Honest, It Feels Like a Rebrand We’re Paying Extra For
Not every brand new cinema experience is actually new. Sometimes, it may just be marketing wearing an expensive designer shoe. And that's how Infinity Vision feels. It's Disney's latest attempt to reshape how we watch films. From hearing the name and the features, it sounds incredible. Bigger screens, sharper visuals and better immersion. But once you look past the branding, it starts to feel more like strategy and less of innovation.
And the whole timing? Very suspicious. It's happening when Avengers: Doomsday is gearing up. Dune part 3 keeps dominating premium formats and IMAX clearly made a decision that didn't favour Disney. When IMAX had to pick, they chose Dune part 3 over Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel movies have dominated cinemas for years so you should know that for IMAX to pick Dune part 3 over Avengers: Doomsday is huge. If you don't know what IMAX is let me tell you. IMAX is a cinema where movies are being played in a more clear and immersive way. To watch a movie in IMAX, you'll have to pay double of a normal cinema ticket. And since Avengers will not be playing on IMAX, Disney introduced Infinity Vision so they can get more profits from the movie.
Dune was made for IMAX, shot with IMAX cameras, designed for massive scale, built around visual immersion. Meanwhile Marvel movies, while big, haven’t always: prioritized IMAX filming, used the format to its full potential. So from a technical standpoint?IMAX didn’t betray Marvel. They chose the film that actually fits their system better. Instead of accepting the situation, Disney created its own alternative: Infinity Vision. And the message is clear: “If we can’t control IMAX… we’ll build our own version.”
According to Disney, this format offers: Expanded aspect ratios, enhanced brightness and color, amore “immersive” viewing experience. Sounds familiar? Because it is. It sounds a lot like IMAX, Dolby Cinema,Other premium formats. So the question becomes: What’s actually new here? Infinity vision doesn't feel special in any way. It just feels like a branded version of what already exists. Cinema tickets are already getting expensive if you add Infinity Vision pricing system, you're paying more money for a slightly enhanced experience that may not even be different from watching a movie in a normal cinema.
Studios know that people respond to labels. If you call something premium, enhanced or exclusive, they'll assume it's better. But in reality, there's just a slight difference. This is bigger than just one format. It shows a shift in the industry: Studios want more control over distribution. Instead of relying on IMAX, Third-party systems, they want: Their own ecosystem. They want to be in control.
The most interesting part is that both Dune part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday did not shift their release dates. It actually shows how much both movies confidence and neither of them want to show weakness by shifting the date. Infinity Vision feels unnecessary. Not because it’s bad but because it’s not different enough. It’s solving a problem that didn’t really exist for viewers But did exist for Disney.
At the end of the day you’re not paying for “Infinity Vision” You’re paying for the movie. So the real question isn’t "What format should I watch it in?” It is "Is the movie even worth it?” Because no matter how big the screen is a bad movie is still a bad movie and a great one? Will hit you even on a normal screen.
