The Rise and Fall of Showmax: Why Africa’s Big Streaming Dream Is Pulling The Plug

The Rise and Fall of Showmax: Why Africa’s Big Streaming Dream Is Pulling The Plug

For many years, Showmax has been a place where Africans watch movies, series, and sports. But now the company behind it has decided to pull the plug after more than a decade.

Showmax started operations in 2015 in South Africa. It was created by MultiChoice, the same people who own DStv and GOTV. Showmax could be streamed on different devices like laptops, phones and tablets. Replacing traditional TV. The platform mainly focused on African stories, which gave it a distinctive feature. Showmax offered movies, shows, kids' entertainment, documentaries, African originals and sports.

Over the years people used Showmax. It even attracted 3.1 million users across Africa. It even had higher subscriber numbers than Netflix. In 2023, Showmax partnered with the American entertainment company NBCUniversal. It helped renew the app and give it better content. The company invested billions into new technology and adding 1300 hours of content. It looked like Showmax was headed the right way, but it wasn't.

Even though millions of people used Showmax, the platform had serious financial problems. Running a streaming service is very expensive. A company must pay for movie and TV rights, internet servers, technology, app development, marketing, and original productions. All these things cost huge amounts of money. Reports later showed that Showmax was losing a lot of money every year. Another big reason was because of the streaming wars. They had to compete with bigger studios like Netflix and Disney+. These companies spend much money on producing shows.

Also, the economic hardship also contributed to it. When families are on a tight budget, cancelling their subscription will definitely be on the list. Many African countries are dealing with rising inflation, expensive data, and cost of living. This made it for Showmax to survive.

Another major change is when Canal+ acquired MultiChoice. They did the numbers, and they said Showmax wasn't a perfect fit. Instead it'll help them focus more on building a stronger streaming plan for the future.

Showmax played an important role in African storytelling. It helped produce and distribute many original African shows. Some of its popular productions came from Nigeria’s Nollywood and South Africa’s TV industry. Because of platforms like Showmax, African creators were able to tell stories that reached audiences across the continent.

For many viewers, this announcement feels like the end of an era. It was a haven where African stories could be told. But the entertainment world is always changing. New platforms would appear sooner or later.
