Project Hail Mary Is Finally Here… And Honestly? Nobody Expected This.
Okay I went into Project Hail Mary with very mixed or even no expectations at all. On one hand the story is loved, on the other, Hollywood just has a way of ruining movies so I wasn't really having any hopes for this movie. I just sat down and watched the movie, I stopped having doubts, and stopped comparing. Wow I was wrong. The movie is so awesome plus if you're seeing it on the big screen, you'll be so immersed like you're in space. This movie is something you can't watch at home because of this one in a life time experience.
If you're expecting loud action scenes and plenty every 5 minutes explosions in this movie, sorry to burst your bubble but you won't find it. The movie has a more quiet tone. Not boring quiet but focuses more on thinking, problem solving and loneliness. There are moments where the main character is literally just trying to figure something out and somehow, it feels more stressful than a fight scene.
Ryan Gosling really carried the movie but not in your cool, brave superhero way, he actually just played his role like the way a normal person would. The scared, confused and out of control kinda person.
Now in the movie, the complexity of the science didn't feel like homework. It's something that everyone can understand. Almost like a conversation and that's rare. Because in season movies like the flash where they start talking science stuff, some people may not be able to comprehend what the actors are saying they just pretend like "okay that's nice", "oh wow".
The movie was somehow quietly released and it's performing really well. The audiences are loving it and they are saying it's very different from most space films. Now people are really tired of films having the same plot and using the same formula. In some movies, some parts just feels predictable. But Project Hail Mary shows up and reminds us that movies can still feel fresh, slower, more emotional and smarter.
Okay the movie is not perfect though. There are some scenes where they just drag the plot unevenly and some explanations go longer than expected but to me I'd rather watch a movie that tries something different and stumbles a little, than one that plays it safe and feels empty.
The story is about not giving up when things feel impossible, facing your fear, adapting and also connecting. It's about a man called Ryland Grace who wakes up alone in a spaceship with no memory of who he is. Slowly he realises he's on a mission to save earth. The sun is dying because of a mysterious microbe and if he doesn't stop it on time, humanity is finished. Biggest twist is that he meets an alien named Rocky who is also trying to save his own planet instead of fighting, they work together. The friendship between Grace and Rocky is EVERYTHING. People expected: Science, Survival, Space danger. But what they got was a deep, emotional bond that feels real. That’s why audiences keep saying: “I didn’t expect to feel this much”.
This is where things get crazy. The rotten tomatoes scores sits at 95 percent while the audience score is at 98 percent. That's very rare. Critics describe it as “a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart”. The movie is still holding strong at the box office and has crossed $300million+. It even became Amazon MGM’s biggest movie ever.
Was it really worth it? Yes! This movie deserves an 8/10. The movie is still playing in theatres.
