Supergirl Was Supposed to Give DC Another Win. So Why Didn't More People Show Up?

Supergirl Was Supposed to Give DC Another Win. So Why Didn't More People Show Up?

I know people have already been used to superhero movies breaking records and scoring points that if doesn't, people immediately label it as a failure. Yes, I can't ignore what happened to the Supergirl movie. Going into this movie, there was genuine excitement. DC had finally started building a new cinematic universe under James Gunn, and many fans believed this would be another big step after Superman. Instead, Supergirl opened to numbers that were lower than many people expected. That surprised me. Not because I thought it would become the biggest movie of the year, but because I genuinely believed audiences were ready to support DC's fresh start. Instead, many people stayed home. So that made me ask a bigger question. Was the movie the problem, or were audiences simply not interested? And to be honest, the movie wasn't bad.

Supergirl's name is Kara Zor-El and she's Superman's cousin. Both of them came from the planet Krypton before it was destroyed. The biggest difference is that Kara remembers Krypton, she remembers her home, she remembers losing everything. One thing I really liked is that Supergirl doesn't spend its time trying to copy Superman. That would've been the easiest thing to do. Instead, the movie gives Kara her own personality. She doesn't solve every problem the same way Clark does. She reacts differently, she makes different decisions, sometimes she's tougher, sometimes she's more emotional. Too many superhero movies make the character feel like they're very powerful and all but at least they made Kara her own person. Milly Alcock also did a very good job playing the character. Everyone has a version of how their superhero character is supposed to act. So just by playing the character alone would feel like a huge risk. But she didn't imitate anyone's version, instead she created something new.

The box office reception for this movie was quite poor though. For one, superhero movies aren't the guaranteed hits they used to be. Ten years ago, people bought tickets almost automatically. Today? Audiences are much pickier. People don't just want another superhero, they want a movie that feels different. I also think some casual viewers still feel confused about DC. The studio has restarted its universe, changed actors, cancelled projects, announced new ones. If you've followed everything, it makes sense. If you're just an ordinary movie fan, it can feel confusing. Sometimes confusion is enough to stop someone from buying a ticket. And that's a bigger problem than people realize. Sometimes huge expectations become impossible to satisfy because James Gunn's new DC Universe began with so much excitement, every movie now carries enormous pressure. People aren't just judging one film, they're judging the future of the entire franchise. Unfair but that's the reality now.

Here's where my opinion might surprise some people. I don't think Supergirl deserved to be ignored. Was it perfect? No. I honestly don't believe any superhero movie is. But I do think people judged it before giving it a chance. That's becoming a bigger problem in modern cinema. Sometimes audiences decide whether a movie is "good" weeks before they've even seen it. One trailer disappoints them and before you know it someone on social media says it's boring, an tkhen a few negative comments go viral. Suddenly, thousands of people skip the movie without ever forming their own opinion.

If someone asked me whether Supergirl is worth watching, I'd say yes. Not because it's flawless, not because it breaks every box office record, But because it reminds me why I enjoy superhero stories in the first place.

Motor City Is One of 2026’s Strangest Action Movies And That’s Exactly Why It’s Worth Watching

Motor City is a gritty 1970s Detroit revenge thriller starring Alan Ritchson. The movie follows John Miller, a man whose life is destroyed after he is betrayed, framed for a crime and sent to prison. When he eventually gets out, he sets out to settle the score with the people responsible. What makes Motor City different is that it almost completely removes dialogue. Instead, the movie relies on music, action, facial expressions, sound and visuals to tell its story. That bold choice gives it a distinctive style, but it has also divided viewers.
